Welcome to the summer 2013 newsletter

This newsletter contains details of changes that have been made to the icthomework site over the past term.

New exercises

We have added a new exercise section to the site entitled, Programming: Python. This section contains a first batch of seven exercises on Python. An installation guide for Python is also included. These exercises are listed below:

0.
Installing Python 2 minutes 34 seconds
1.
Introduction to Python 2 minutes 14 seconds
2.
Printing: Enclosing Text 4 minutes 48 seconds
3.
Printing: Separating Text 2 minutes 08 seconds
4.
Printing: Line Endings 8 minutes 30 seconds
5.
Introduction to Lists 5 minutes 50 seconds
6.
Getting Random List Elements 6 minutes 32 seconds
7.
Random Stories Using Lists 5 minutes 56 seconds

These exercises are movie-based. There are two versions of these exercises. The first is a version which uses Flash to render the material; the second version uses HTML 5.

The exercises can be used as a stand-alone introduction to Python but should ideally be used to support a class-based introduction to the Python language. The exercises are designed to complement our existing GUI-based Scratch exercises.

Change to the Exercise Menu

The exercise menu has been reorganised so as to group together the Logo, Scratch and Python exercises under a programming umbrella.

Revision to Reports

A minor change has been made to the reports, which export completed and uncompleted homework tasks by class: a gender field has been added to these reports.

New Developments

A second batch of Python exercises will be released later this year.

We would welcome your suggestions on further developments. To do this, you can either use the suggestions page on the site or you can email directly to:
